Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is a community garden?
A community garden is a public piece of land that is shared with a group of people. Community gardens provide fresh products and plants as well as contributing to a sense of community and connection to the environment and an opportunity for satisfying labor and neighbourhood improvement.
Throughout the season, community gardeners come together to host education events and volunteer to make the garden even better. Community gardens make gardening a social event. It's a great opportunity to grow vegetables, get some fresh air, and build lasting friendships.
2. How does the Indian Head Community Garden work?
After registering, you are provided a plot (200 square feet) to plant your very own garden. During the season, you are responsible for planting, watering, and general upkeep of your garden. You get to keep all the produce you grow as this is your private garden. You also get access to the communal plots which are grown for everyone's benefit.
3. I'm a new gardener, what do I need to get started?
We strive to have a very low barrier to entry. All that is required is to pay your seasonal registration and bring seeds of your choice. You can also try seeds from the seed library, for free. The seed library is located in the Indian Head Public Library.
4. What are my responsibilities as a member of the community garden?
We are 100% volunteer run and ask our members lend a hand periodically for the greater good of the garden. For example, we may require watering of the communal plots, the compost to be turned, or help with the fall clean-up.
5. How do I get to know my fellow gardeners?
Be sure to say hi to your fellow gardeners and introduce yourself. We are a friendly bunch. After the restrictions of the past few years, we are eager to get out and socialize. We also host events throughout the season that are a great way to meet others as well.
6. How much is the registration fee?
The fee for the season is $40 but temporarily reduced to $30. We were able to lower the fee because of generous support from sponsors including Firefly Rentals, Sask Lotteries, and the Town of Indian Head.
7. What if I can't afford the fee?
We understand the rising cost of living is making food security more and more challenging. If you're struggling, please reach out to us and we will make arrangements to get you into the garden.
6. This sounds great, where do I sign up?
Please use our contact form and we will gladly get you a paper copy of the form.
